This cache is not at the indicated coordinates. You can swim out in the salty lake if you like but you will find no treasure there. To find this cache you must find pieces of a treasure map. This treasure map was drawn by an elusive bank robber who is rumored to have tagged along with a doomed wagon train and met an untimely death on route to the west coast. The treasure map was cut into 16 pieces and they are now lost. You will find a piece of the treaure map by finding some of the recovered gold coins and placing them in one of 48 designated caches in the state of Utah. Click here for more information and to play the game.

You will need to find 16 different coins and place them in 16 of the oldest caches in the state of Utah. Only diehard and determined treasure hunters will have a chance to finish this quest.

Have fun and beware of the curse of the Hermit!

When I did this one, I had just played the game on the caching place. When the map is complete, and with a lot of searching, you can find the cache. It would be much more fun to do it that way. Just telling you where it is would ruin the fun. After you have completed the caching game, if you need help with the map, I am sure one of us could help you.

The link in the page used to link to a webpage with the cachunut games on it. That server has been offline for a little while now. There are rumors that Cachunuts is going to move the sites onto the server that UTAG has but the timeline is unclear. I probably still have my notes from completing this cache if the site doesn't come back online. I don't mind sharing.

WOW WOW WOW - What else can I say?? What a cool cache and overall experience.

Starting after coin quest 2 I really wanted to sort this out and figure out this puzzle. After off again on again searching and decoding I thought I finally had a really good idea of the location. After a confirmation of "being close" from a previous finder I felt good about the journey. Having UtahJefe, DMRodCo, & Keebler_UT along for the ride made this even more memorable. The hike had some treacherous moments but we all made it in about 45 minutes taking our time in the heat. It took another 20 minutes to find the cache. We relished in our accomplishment and gave high fives. I will wear my button with pride and carry my coin to share with others. There were 7 coins in the cache when we got there and 3 when we left. Also left a Red Jeep TB as this seems a fitting location and puzzle challenge.

Thanks to Cachunuts for another amazing experience that makes the top 5 in my book.

I have wanted to come after this one since finishing the coin quest, and when I found out that the map worked for both, I did a little research, and got right to the High Point. I had a bit of trouble (about an hour) finding the cache after I got there, but I finally did it. This will probably be my last cache before moving to Nevada, and I wanted it to be a special one. I also had to drop a cachunut before I left, so it is in there.

We searched every boulder, cave, and odd looking mound of dirt. We spent countless days and many nights searching for the cache. We did find a cave with arrowheads in it, but it did not hold the cache. We found several types of lizards, one, which to the delight of the dino_hunter jrs bit mr. dino_hunter. We also saw tons of bunnies and one large snake. We endured several stickers, thorns, and annoying bugs. We searched and searched until dino_hunter jr. found a “sign of the hermit”. It’s amazing what a 3 year old notices. This narrowed our search by several hundred miles. Our search finally moved to “cottontail mountain” (named by dino_hunter jr.) Mr. dino_hunter said “we should pass this one over because the cache won’t be there” Yet after many more trips to the desert he finally gave in and packed a gallon of water headed up to prove it wasn’t there. As he neared the top, he saw the location of the first team’s victory pictures. Then he saw some footprints and realized he may have found the eluded cache. He searched and believe it or not actually found the cache!!!!

We took conquistador coin #291, and 2 “I survived the muddy plains of death” pins and a frog and left a lego man, a lion and a new stampin’ fools gamepiece #46 the butterfly.

Near the cache are some fossilized algae blobs, please take a picture, in my delusion I forgot to take a picture and would love to have one. (all around the cache area and top of mountain)

We did find some amazing specimens of horned coral, and colony coral and brachiopods, mostly on the tops of mountains and hills because they weren’t broken up yet. . This area is full of amazing rocks. Email us and we can give you coordinates to some of these places that have the arrowheads or fossils. Thanks cach-u-nuts for an exciting game and making us work really hard to get there!!!!!

We traveled to places far and near in search of the Hermits Gold. We finally had all of the pieces of his map. We did our research and calculations and determined where we thought the Hermit had hid his coins those many years ago. We found the peak, we counted paces and sure enough there was the stash of gold coins! We took our alloted share. There are still 11 more coins in the cache for anyone else who wants to go for the GOLD.

After leaving, we walked 6 miles across the muddy plains of death in search of another cache. Those pioneers were sure a hardy determined bunch.

A BIG thanks to Craig and Georgia for putting this game together. You two are awesome and just a little nuts.

I do believe there is a curse on the Hermit’s Gold Coins. Found the Hermit’s Treasure and removed one of the Gold Coins, took it home to admirer its fine quality of craftsmanship and weight in Gold. After several days of admiring this fine coin, I found I was having trouble sleeping; I would toss and turn wakeup in the night seeing the face of the old Hermit. Man this was getting real spooky. I have decided to return the Hermit’s Gold Coin to the Treasure Box, maybe I will get a good nights sleep.

Remember me words, this could happen to you. “THE HERMIT’S LOST COIN CURSE” may be on you!!

Photo The Hermit

 June 16, 2004 by UtahJean (5225 found)

The night before our final expedition to look for the Hermit’s golden treasure, I poured over the hard-won treasure map, as well as topo and GPX maps and history books. Eventually, it all congealed, and the force whispered in my ear—“The treasure lies there!” Actually, the force was shouting, and I had no doubt in my mind whatsoever--I knew exactly where the treasure lay.

“I’ve got it. I’ve got it. I know where it is,” I eagerly informed my team. They rolled their eyes, but the next morning off we went anyway. After a very long drive, we finally arrived at the first location. “Right there,” I said, pointing. That’s where we go.” DHob was a bit skeptical and had to sort things out for himself, but eventually he followed us. BunkerDave, who had confirmed my calculations during the night, immediately bunkerdaved his way up, and by the time Chris of Dorkteam and I arrived, he was sitting with the cache contents spread all about him, happily signing the log book. I was gratified to see the coordinates were smack on target. The force had not failed us.

We spent some time on top logging, taking pictures and congratulating ourselves, and enjoying the view. I was a bit leery of posing on the edge of a cliff for a group photo, thinking Hob and Dave might still be aggravated enough at me to toss me overboard, but to my relief, they didn’t. We talked about the history of the place. Dorkteam was voted to have the “honor” of taking the special cach-u-nut, and it wasn’t long before I donated a bandana to throttle the dang thing. What an annoying creation it is. After selecting our Conquistador coins and trading for some of the excellent cache items, we eventually climbed back down to our vehicles and had a celebratory picnic lunch in the shade of my Explorer.

All in all, this game was wild, wicked and unrelenting. For a while we wondered if our friendships were going to survive. I sure hope they have. I know I drove the fellows nuts being so scatterbrained, but then, we all made mistakes at times. Poor Dorkteam probably wondered how we ever made it as far as we did, what with all the bickering going on. It was terrifically hard to keep everything sorted out--which caches we could still make a trade at, which ones the coins could go into and then which ones the “tradee” could go to and whether his coin could go in this cache or that. We had to do mega miles of travel to get things done, both on foot and driving. I was worn to a frazzle. I’m still tired and still trying to place all my remaining coins to fill out the required 16 coins and 160 points. I really enjoyed returning to so many old caches, even the multiple trips to aqua-gone, pink floyd and Mormon Flats. I’m really attached to those caches now. Craig and Georgia Cach-U-Nuts put in so much work putting this crazy game together. I hope all of you left in the game keep on playing and hope some new players join in too. The final is well worth the effort. How nice it would have been if Craig and Georgia could have played. The rest of us simply MUST come up with a game so they can join in the play.

Great fun!! Thanks so much C-Nuts. We love ya! OK, now I’m gonna go lie down for a while. Whew! UtahJean

Yes I had a great time looking for the Hermits Lost Gold. Like the others, it was a GOOD hike, as always I was bringing up the rear. I do think I took the same rout that the Cach-U took, was following in someone’s foot steps. This cache was running over with GOLD. Took Gold Conquistador Coin # 233, Cach-U-Nut #103. Left Blue Biner, Dhobby1 & Louie Pin, Yellow Jeep TB and a UTAG Card. Good job Cach-U-Nuts. I will never disclose the secret of the Lost Hermit’s GOLD Treasure. Good luck to all you fellow cachers looking for this AWESOME GOLD TREASURE. I’m outa here.

Had a nice hike, with a great bunch of cachers. I took a Conquistador coin and the obnoxious nut #314. The nut is so obnoxious nobody wanted to hike down with me. So I wraped it up with a hankerchief I borrowed from UtahJean. The battery has almost worn out it has been going of so much, but I will replace it before I place again so someone else can enjoy it as much as I did. I left 5 pez dispensers and nut #103. Thanks Cachunuts for making this awesome game and making Geocaching much more fun to do.

Our quest for the Conquistador Coins has at last come to an end...we made an early morning run to the desolate waste and after some searching and thinking, found the prize we sought. I would love to give lots of details, because it was a great time with Dhobby, UtahJean, and Dorkteam, but I would end up giving too much away. Unless directed otherwise, the secret of the Hermit's Treasure will die with me. I took a Gold Conquistador Coin, and a pen. I left a tire pressure gauge, a couple of GPS lanyards, and some new batteries. Thanks heaps for a great game, Cach-u-nuts. It was wonderful. - bd

 June 12, 2004 by dino_hunters (586 found)

Well, we wandered the deserts and the mountains, for a very long time. It was hot, it was dry, and it was dusty. It cost us a lot of gas. I just hope that the checks don’t go through before I get paid this week!!! Good thing Monday is a bank holiday (Flag Day). We were following the trail used by those ill-fated pioneers. We searched EVERYWHERE, but were still unable to find the Hermit’s Lost Coins. We checked every possible location that could hide a geocache. We did find a few broken arrowheads. About the only life we saw, were the bugs and the lizards. We did see three antelope at one point, and a couple of jackrabbits.

There were things worse than the miserable muddy plains of death!!! Mr. dino_hunters thought about shooting himself many times. Mrs. dino_hunters, who is currently pregnant, had to stop every 15 minutes. Dino_hunters jr., who is currently undergoing potty training, wanted to go on a bug, every 15 minutes. To Mr. dino_hunters dismay, they could not coordinate their schedules. I also did not think it right, to leave dino_hunters III’s (age 1 ½) dirty diapers out in the desert. However, late in the day when I had to get in the trunk, I had second thoughts.

Then there was the constant screaming and/or squealing between dino_hunters jr. and dino_hunters III. At the end of the day, Mr. dino_hunters voice was hoarse from the endless rounds of “Old McDonald Had a Farm” (favorite animals were dinosaurs and bugs). Then, Mrs. dino_hunters had to send Mr. dino_hunters to investigate EVERY odd-looking desert feature. At least he slept through most of the leg cramps that night. He also suffered from a cactus needle in his little toe (its always his little toe). He is thinking of cutting it off, and making it into a travel bug.

Incidentally, we did find the skeleton of one ill-fated geocacher. He had a faded copy of the Hermit’s map in one hand, and a GPS in the other. The map was useless, and so was the GPS. It was a Magellan.

Be sure to check out our pictures!!! They will be posted soon.
