Reverend John Tucke arrived on Star Island in 1731. A 1723 graduate of Harvard, he remained in the service of Star’s population for over 40 years. The obelisk monument erected in his honor in 1914 by the New Hampshire Historical Society stands over 46 feet high and can be seen from almost every vantage point on the island.
Rustic Star Island, among the rocky, windy Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire, is a non-profit retreat and conference center. The Star Island Corporation has owned and operated the island as a religious and educational facility since 1915 and welcomes geocaching visitors. Steeped in history as a fishing community since the early 1600’s, Star Island has become a respite from the hectic pace of life for generations of families attending week-long conferences throughout the summer. For information about visiting for a day, a night, or up to a week, and how to get to Star Island, go to the starisland.org website. Once there, enjoy wandering about the island and its paths (wandering from paths means encountering poison ivy) and relax in a rocking chair on the porch as you wait for the boat to return you to the mainland. (This is one of four caches placed with the permission of the management of Star Island. Cache is a typical ammo can.)
