Geocache Description:

Short, but very steep hike in Stub Stewart park. Can be done on foot, on a mountain bike, or on a horse.

If you liked the Kings Ransom cache, you'll like this one too. It's very steep but much shorter of course. You can park at the Buxton trailhead of the Banks-Vernonia bike trail and ride your bike about 1.5 miles to the Caddywhomper trailhead. Or you can park at Stub Stewart park and ride downhill on the Banks-Vernonia bike trail about two miles to the Caddywhomper trailhead. Trail maps are available at the Stub Stewart Visitor Center. Caddywhomper is a logging term for a tree that is twisted and bent out of shape. Did not see too many of these on this trail though, but elsewhere in the park you will! One caution, if you are biking all the way up to the cache: the route down is very steep and you MUST have good brakes on your bike to maintain control. This would not be a good way to descend with younger children or if you have your old ten speed! From the Buxton Banks-Vernonia trail parking lot it takes about 15 minutes to get to the Caddywhomper trailhead on your bike. Watch for the sign on the right. Then the one mile steep, rocky trail takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on your stamina. If you don't want to push your bike up the hill, just lock it to a tree and hike up. If you do take your bike up, the return trip takes about 6 minutes, braking hard the whole way! See caution above. Of course if you are riding a horse, you have it made! Give your friend some extra hay though when you get back to camp! You are looking for a green plastic 3 quart container. Please seal the container securely when done.
