Geocache Description:

Most people think of Shropshire as a peaceful and quiet County but in WW2 this was far from the truth. Church Stretton and Craven Arms were major munitions storage dumps and the Long Mynd had great strategic importance and some strange secret sites. This is the first in a series of 4 caches on and around the Long Mynd put out to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VE day. All have a WW2 connection but what is it? You will have to visit the cache to find out.

I have given all the car park locations as grid references. I suggest that you buy a map of the area (OS explorer 1:25,000 sheet 217 is the best) and plot the locations and chose a route before you start.  The series can easily be done in a day and a nice place to start is from the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms.

Please be careful on the series, the roads up to the top of the Long Mynd and down the other side are steep, single track and unguarded.  DRIVE CAREFULLY.   The caches all involve some rough and sometimes steep walking

The 4 caches are:

·        Dead Man’s Bridge

·        Minton Beware

·        A Bridge too far – Pole Cottage

·        The Lone Pine Club

Drive up the road signed to the Longmynd hotel from Church Stretton and park in the car park, grid SO 449 936, on the right just after the hotel turning.  It’s the hotel that has a fascinating WW2 connection.

From the car park go into Rectory Fields and take the left hand path up the hill, through the gate and into the wood.  After about 100M the path goes both left and right; take the left hand path along the edge of the small valley.    Carry on down this path and you will come to a strange little footbridge which gives the cache its name.  Go over the bridge and follow your GPS.

Please make sure that you rehide the cache carefully and watch out for muggles.

After you have visited the cache drive back down the hill and turn left just before the main road.  About 100 yards along here is St Laurence’s Church.  Try to make time to visit the memorial plaque that remembers the work
