Geocache Description:

Located in Youth Memorial Park in Augusta, ME. PLEASE park around the "loop" off of Alden Ave. N44 18.696 W069 48.008

**NOTE TO THOSE USING WESTERN AVE -- Do NOT park on/near "Pet Haven Lane." USE Orchard Street or Armory St. to get to the side streets that lead to Alden Ave. The director of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society was sorry to have to limit our ability to park there, but they DO have limited parking. She was nice, and familiar with the sport -- so if you're looking for a family pet, maybe you could check it out after the cache? It's at the top of the hill from the park.

Cache is a clear, medium-sized Lock 'N' Lock container filled with goodies. First 5 cachers or so, PLEASE take something!! There is a FTF wooden coin, and it's stuffed with items, so you may not have room to trade at first.

This is my first cache, so if anyone has suggestions, please e-mail me throuh the site. Thanks!

My inspiration for placing this cache, is a gentleman I knew in school. He was the nicest guy, really cool and down-to-earth....he was a janitor @ the school. I thought he was just the greatest guy, the way he helped out with backstage for the talent show....He always had a kind word for anyone and everyone.

My family and I used to come down to this park behind the now-permanently-closed Buker School, to park with take-out from Western Ave, or to check out the playground, hang out on the swings, etc.

The amazing thing, is that this man I knew in school, and this park, are tragically connected.

There is a stone in the center of the loop, that has the names of teenagers who died in a terrible car crash in 1979. Two of these teens were the only children of this man, whom I had admired for his kindness and sense of humor.

They died during their senior year of high school.

I never knew about this while I was in school, during the time when I knew this man, who had been through such a loss.

So I have established this cache, in order to honor the man (his name left out as I have no contact with him now to OK this), and his kids, as well as the others who died with them. Life is short, and goes by so fast....please take the time to let those you know and love, KNOW THAT YOU CARE. You never know when it'll be your last opportunity to do so.

This person also taught me that you never can be fully aware of what has happened to the people around you, what they've endured. Don't hold back in telling people that you appreciate them. I've never said anything to the person, and now I wish I had....but why should it take knowing this about him to WANT to say that I thought he was cool? Why shouldn't others know that we appreciate their presence in our lives?

Seize your opportunities.....and seize the meaning of this cache. I've placed many items inside that have made me smile, and I hope that they do so for you as well.

Just like the janitor did for me. =)

Congrats to pete490 on the FTF!!!
