Geocache Description:

An interesting connection was made while traveling in Utah between the Mountain Meadows Massacre and the street where we live. You will have to think about this one and use your geo-sense if you want a happy face. Watch for Muggles especially JAWCachers and JOLWesters who live nearby.

We have lived near Fancher Creek for 44 years. Our street was even called Fancher Creek until the Post Office decided to change it to Fancher Ave due to the fact that there were two Fanchers about 6 miles apart. It wasn’t until we started traveling that we found out about Captain Alexander Fancher and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Our street and creek became much more interesting when we made that connection. And geocachers deserved a cache on the Eastside. John Fancher was the older brother of Alexander "Piney Alex" Fancher. John Fancher owned a cattle ranch east of Fresno, in Tulare County, California (now in Fresno County, California). The Alexander Fancher party was headed to John Fancher's ranch prior to their execution style murder by the Mormons at Mountain Meadows Utah. John Fancher's cattle ranch in 1857 was located in Tulare County, California, and approximately 50 miles north of Fort Visalia. Tulare County in those days was a very large county and was later broke up into 4 smaller counties. The former John Fancher ranch is now in Fresno County in the fertile flatlands near the intersections of McKinley Ave. and Del Rey Ave., due east of Fresno, California. A creek named after John Fancher runs through the ranch and into Fresno. The area has changed a lot in 44 years: the old Blassingame place which was on McKinley and Highland is now located on McKinley and McCall. There is now a dam and flood basin in its place. There are a lot of houses along Olive, but our street is pretty much the same as it was in the 60’s and the swallows still come back to Fancher Creek Bridge every spring. It is a nice place to raise a family. Park across the street in the circular driveway and watch for traffic crossing. Please replace as you found it.
