The barn swallow (hirundo rustica) is one of the world's smallest migratory birds: only around 18 grams in mass, yet it flies back and forth across the equator every year, spending the summer in each hemisphere.
These annual visitors congregate in southern Africa between autumn and spring. A large colony roosts at the Lake Victoria wetland, just north of Durban. Every evening they assemble just before sunset, then plunge into the reeds. It is quite a spectacle and it is certainly worth packing a picnic and enjoying it at your leisure. Try to arrive early though or else you might have serious muggles problems. There's not too much point in going to this site if you don't stay to see the swallows...
