Geocache Description:

The castle is located about a mile from the town of Kelso in the scottish borders. There is a small layby and style on the main road that goes by the mound but a much nicer route is to be had by walking from Kelso on the Borders Abbey Way walk along the riverside. The terrain around the castle is flat but the castle mound has very steep slopes and can be very overgrown so watch the little yins. Also i obtained many nettle stings setting this cache up, so prepare well.

G:UK cache rating

Roxburgh castle was built in the 1120's by King David I to protect the prosperous town of Roxburgh that lies at it's foot from the English marauders.

Although situated on an excellent geographical and tactical position, strategically flanked by the river Tweed to the north and the river Teviot to the south, it's awesome deffenses were breached a number of times and the city changed hands between the Scots and the English more than ten times.

In 1551 the castle was demolished as part of a peace treaty between England and France. Very little now exists of the ruin, a few broken walls and dykes but you can get a sense of the size and scale of this castle and it's city by walking over the mound upon which it stood.

Alistair Moffats book 'the lost kingdoms of arthur' suggest that these very remains are the most likely candidate to be the ruins of Camelot itself. The town of Roxburgh that the casle protected was one of the largest and wealthiest trade centres in europe. Mr Moffat also points to many interesting pieces of evidence found nearby, like the old town of Kelso that translates in ancient welsh tongue as camelot and several local manuscripts that contain information about a great lord Arthur.

The cache is a small tupperware container with a blue lid, I believe it is well hidden so have a look at the spoiler if you need to and watch those steep slopes.

Cache contains a few nice plastic trinkets for the kids, happy hunting.
