Bottoms Up! Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

MadMin: I attempted to contact the owner of Bottoms Up! to find out about the status of this cache on December 17, 2007. I have received no response from the owner on the cache page or via email. Because of that I'm afraid I have to archive this cache.

I will be more than happy to review this cache again and (hopefully) reinstate it once you have corrected any issues with the cache. please contact me via ma.reviewer@gmail.com to do so.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

A short 2-part meander by the Mumford River falls.
Named in memory of a nearby watering hole: Jack’s Saloon. With saddle seat barstools, a former bowling alley dancefloor, kickin’ live music, and pool tables, it is with sadness we bid adieu to Jack’s. The building now houses a package store featuring fine wines, cigars, pipe tobacco...

Bit o’ History:

The Capron Grist Mill and Gun Shop, now housing Lynch's Package Store, was built in 1821 by John Capron. The pond in back used to be orchards until a log dam across the Mumford River changed it. Next door on the western side used to be the home of John Capron where cloth satinette was made at home. This was removed to make way for the Lynch parking lot. On the eastern side, there were terraced gardens and now is a small park certainly worth a stroll along the Mumford River falls. (Blackstone Daily)

Across the street was the Capron Mill built by Effingham Capron in 1820. The original mill operated under several names during roughly 150 years and was famous for the cloth known as "Uxbridge Blue" patented and used for the US Air Force uniforms. The kettles filled with dyes were dumped into the river after use so the river often ran blue. The mill also produced uniform cloth for the nurse corps, too. A personal letter from President Roosevelt gave thanks to the mill for its tremendous help with the war effort. In 1962, Emile Bernat bought the mill and for nearly three decades, it became the third largest mill in the US for producing yarn. As of the 1990s, it includes a variety of shops, and studios. (Blackstone Daily)

While you’re here, you might like to stroll around the corner to the John Cornet Farnum House. Farnum and his wife, Mary Tyler of Mendon, built the house in 1715. The quaint red five-bedroom, gambrel-roofed clapboard farmhouse was the site of Uxbridge’s first town meetings in 1727, when Uxbridge was separating from Mendon. A private residence through 1926, the house was purchased and restored by the owners of the Uxbridge Worsted Company mill across the street, now the Bernat mill complex. Today, the town-owned building serves as headquarters for the Uxbridge Historical Society.
