Turritella Snail Bed
At this location on Mt. Diablo you will see an example of a
sedimentary rock layer containing the fossil snail, Turritella
aedificata. During the Eocene period, 45 million years ago, these
marine snails likely crawled along the ocean bottom and ate algae.
This fossil deposit is an important marker for the geographic
layers in Mount Diablo. Outcrops are seen a couple of miles to the
east on the Knobcone Pine Trail, so that rock must be the same age
as the rock at this site.
These Turritella aedificata snails are embedded in what once was
the bottom of a shallow inland sea, and has, over millions of
years, moved upward 1700 feet, to the side of this mountain. The
rock layers (or beds) were originally formed in a horizontal
position, but as Mt. Diablo was uplifted, the beds tilted 90
degrees. Here, you're looking at the edge of the beds.
To log this cache, you will need to complete the following:
- Email the cache owner the (a) Describe the shape of the
Turritella Snail and (b) Estimate the Size of the sedimentary rock
layer containing the fossil snail.
- Post a picture of You and your GPS along with the Turritella
Snail bed.

January 16 by rock&crystal (8685 found) Surprised this earthcache had not been visited lately. The bed is still there and waiting for visitors. Our favorite earthcaches usually include fossils and this was another great one. Thanks for the education and the hunt, R&C

November 21, 2009 by MCL1080 (335 found) We had a scout trip to Mt. Diablo and taught them how to use GPS devices by geocaching, this was one of the caches that we found, and got a geology lesson as well, TFTC.

November 2, 2009 by LuckyLady1385 (66 found) Out here with my mom. I want to exercise more so going to caches like this are great because I see how the Earth is and see things differently. Mom will post pictures soon because they are on another computer that is not available right now.

November 2, 2009 by jellis (11378 found) After we did the Wind Caves we came over here. At first we didn't see what was being mentioned. Then LuckyLady noticed it. She doesn't always go caching with me because it is boring to her. But ones like this she likes because she learns something and I am thrilled she shows some interest in the outdoors when there is something to see. Email sent. Picture will be posted soon.
