Geocache Description:

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is one of the few places in the world where the Dwarf Trout Lily grows. This cache is in honor of this special little lily. Its pinkish blooms peak in late April before the trees leaf out in spring. Please use this link to the MN DNR Website to learn more about the Dwarf Trout Lily. (visit link)

This cache is located inside Nerstrand Big Woods State Park and therefore a permit is required. An annual permit is a bargain at $25.00 and a daily permit is $5.00. (The daily permit is good for only one day.) This cache has been placed less than 25 feet off of the trail with the permission of the Park Manager.

It is imperative that you stay on the trails in the portion of the park that is north of the park office. This will ensure the protection of the Dwarf Trout Lily and will help prevent the spread of a very invasive plant called Garlic Mustard. Seeds from the Garlic Mustard can be picked up on footwear and unknowingly scattered about to create new infestations. PLEASE – NO BUSHWHACKING! You can use this link to find out how you can help to stop Garlic Mustard from spreading. (visit link)

After you park in the parking lot, there are a couple of different trails that you can hike to get to this cache. We suggest that you head north through the picnic grounds, follow the Hidden Falls Trail, and then stop and enjoy one of the Big Woods most popular spots – the water fall on Prairie Creek. You can then follow the park trails to the cache. (Approximately a 4-1/2 mile hike!) Trail maps are available at the Park Office, on the park's website, and are also posted on signs at various spots along the trails.

Please respect the natural beauty of the park as you hike. Take nothing but pictures and memories. Leave nothing but footprints. When possible, please Cache In and Trash Out!

We hope you enjoy this Minnesota State Park - it is one of our favorites and we have visited them all! Follow this link to find out about all the things that Nerstrand Big Woods has to offer. (visit link)
