Geocache Description:

April 22
International CITO day

(10:30 am to 4 pm)

April 22 is International CITO (Cache In Trash Out) day. Coincidentally (or not!), it also corresponds with Earth Day. So what do you say we celebrate Earth day, have some fun and clean a park?

Henrietta Louise Edwards Park is a nice park on the South side of the river, right across the Louise McKinney Park. The two parks are connected via a nice, long footbridge. At the posted coordinates, there is a big sheltered picnic area with firepits. We will meet there and set up headquarters for the day. Since the two parks are accessible from that location, we can easily go across and clean both side of the river.

But before speaking of cleaning, let's talk fun stuff! We'll start around 10:15 in the morning. As people arrive, we will find some nearby geocaches, do some games, draw some prizes, and other fun stuff. We will build a fire, so bring some food to roast (hot dog, etc) and also bring your roasting sticks. Those who want can also bring some food to share. Please contact Johnnygeo at (780) 914-1517 or via his profile page to let him know what you are planning on bringing. That'll be a blast!

Then it's the serious stuff. We'll do at least one hour of cleanup. Starting at around 1:00 pm, each of us will grab a bag or two, a pair of work gloves and walk the trails in search of not caches, but trashes(!) The City of Edmonton will provide the trash bags, gloves and all other required material. They will also pick up the bags afterward so we don't have to worry about anything! Thanks to Johnnygeo for setting this up with the city staff.

The Henrietta Louise Edwards Park doesn't have a washroom, but there will be a temporary toilet facility on site so you don't have to worry about finding a spot in the woods to do your thing!

Oh, yes! This is the first official CITO event in Edmonton! While there was one last year on April 16, the event was not registered as a CITO event, so this is a chance, for everyone who attends, to get a new icons on their stats page!

You're not committed to the times, you can leave whenever you need to and we're happy that you show up even if it's for an hour. The times help us plan our day effectivly and we plan to stick to it as much as possible 'cause we are committed to the CITO cleanup. Note that we agreed to a challenge between Edmonton and Medecine Hat, which are doing a similar event on the same day. There will be a winning city, the one that brings back more trash per head! We will be giving prizes for those who pick up more trash.

Let's all show the world that Edmonton geocachers do Care & Give Back.
