THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED CO-ORDINATES, but they do locate the start of a trail that leads to the boulders. Please refer to the cache descriptions for the “On the Way to Yam Boulders (GC1B225)” and “The Stone House (GC1B22H)” caches to get a detailed route description for the initial section of this journey. The entire round trip distance, including the first two caches, would be approximately 4.5 kms with an elevation gain of about 150 meters.
Route description and instructions, starting at “The Stone House“ cache (bring a copy):
1. Head towards the posted co-ordinates, following the cut line and then the quarry fence line (quarry and quarry road are off limits).
2. At the posted co-ordinates turn southwest and follow a good trail to R2.
3. At R2 turn west-northwest and head towards S1 on minimal trails.
4. Stage 1-The “Crack of Doom” is your first test. Here you will find the co-ordinates for S2. Those with good vision may escape the need to jump across the Crack of Doom – but then you miss out on that adrenalin rush!
5. Stage 2 - The “Slightly Scary Slab”. When you get to S2 you will have to get to the top of the slab, look carefully for further signs (arrows-smileys) that will lead to the co-ordinates for S3.
6. Stage 3 - The “Tricky Start-Easy Finish Giant Rock”. Up you go to get the co-ordinates for S4. Nice view up here!
7. Stage 4 - Is “Nice & Easy” but interesting never the less. Here you will find the co-ordinates for the Yam Boulders Final. Almost there!
8. The Yam Boulders final (870ml LnL) is hidden on top of what I call “Picnic Rock”. You will have to climb to the top to claim your reward!
NOTE ON THE STAGE CO-ORDINATES– the co-ordinates are written in several places at each WP, on both the solid rock and on the undersides of a few small, close at hand rocks. The last four digits are shown, as only they change.
These rocks are the result of a huge rock fall from the cliffs of Yamnuska (a mini Frank Slide) and are composed of 530 million year old Middle Cambrian Limestone. Some of them are obviously used by rock jocks for bouldering activities. They have a very rough and sharp texture so you may want to wear leather gloves to protect your hands, I didn’t and therefore left a few bits and pieces of BVPete here and there during my explorations. The "climbs" encountered on the journey to find the cache are all quite easy.
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL AS YOU TRAVEL OVER THIS ROCK FALL, AS THERE IS AMPLE OPPORTUNITY TO GET INJURED IF YOU ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION. IF YOU DON’T LIKE CLIMBING AROUND ON GIANT BOULDERS THIS IS NOT THE CACHE FOR YOU! ALSO, THIS WOULD NOT BE A FUN CACHE IF THERE IS ANY SNOW COVER.
