Die Karlshöhe

Die Bergkuppe, auf der im Mittelalter möglicherweise die nicht genau nachgewiesene Reinsburg stand, besteht aus Schilfsandstein (geologisch: Stuttgart-Formation), der seit dem 14. Jahrhundert abgebaut und für Gebäude in Stuttgart verwendet wurde. Dadurch entstand eine Senke im Zentrum des Hügels.
Der Name Schilfsandstein rührt von den Abdrücken fossiler Schachtelhalme und Farne im Gestein her, die früher irrtümlich als Schilfhalme angesprochen wurden.
Die Stuttgart-Formation (Schilfsandstein oder Schilfsandstein-Schichten) ist eine lithostratigraphische Formation des Keupers in der Germanischen Trias.
Die Stuttgart-Formation ist überwiegend durch Sand- und Siltsteine charakterisiert. Die Sedimente der Stuttgart-Formation wurden in einem weiten flachen Becken abgelagert, in das sich zu Beginn einige Flussrinnen oft mehrere 10er Meter tief in die unterlagernde Grabfeld-Formation eingeschnitten haben. Die Täler wurden dann in einer zweiten Phase mit Sandsteinen verfüllt („Sandsteinstränge“). In einem weiteren Zyklus schnitten sich erneut Täler in den Untergrund ein und wurden erneut mit Sandsteinen verfüllt. In einem dritten Zyklus wurde nun das gesamte Gebiet flächig von Sand- und Siltsteinen überdeckt. In den Bereichen zwischen den Flüssen bildeten sich Überflutungsebenen mit Wurzelböden.
Noch heute wird Schilfsandstein stellenweise abgebaut und als Baustoff für die Renovierung historischer Bauten verwendet.

The hilltop on which the Middle Ages may not exactly proven Reins castle stood, consists of reed sandstone (geology: Stuttgart-Formation), the 14th since the century was mined and used for buildings in Stuttgart. This was a depression in the center of the hill.
The name comes from the impressions Schilfsandstein fossil horsetails and ferns in the rocks here, which were previously addressed in error as reeds.
The Stuttgart-Formation (sandstone reed or reeds sandstone layers) is a lithostratigraphic formation of the Keuper in the Germanic Triassic.
The Stuttgart Formation is mainly characterized by sand and siltstone. The sediments of the Stuttgart-Formation have been deposited in a wide shallow basin into which some early river channels often cut several 10-feet deep into the subjacent Grabfeld formation. The valleys were then filled in a second phase with sandstones (sandstone columns "). In a subsequent cycle again cut their valleys into the ground and once again were filled with sandstone. In a third cycle now the whole area was flat covered by sand-and siltstones. In the areas between the rivers, flood plains formed with root surfaces.
Even today, reed sandstone is in places reduced and used as building material for the renovation of historic buildings.
