Geocache Description:

This is one of the series of caches placed throughout Camden County to bring awareness to historical locations. It has been placed here with the permission of the Mayor of Lindenwold. Please be respectful of the area around the cache as nothing needs to be disturbed to find it.

Gloucester Township, Newton Township and Waterford Township were laid out on June 1, 1695. Gloucester Township then extended, as did the County of Gloucester, from the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean.

On November 15th, 1831, the Township of Union was carved out of Gloucester Township, on the north side toward the river. In 1837, Atlantic County was erected which again lopped off quite a large piece of Gloucester Township and of Gloucester County as well. On February 24, 1903 Clementon Township was formed, again snipping off another piece of Gloucester Township.

The town on Lindenwold was plotted in 1885, still a part of Gloucester Township. Lindenwold was named by Wimer Bedford, Secretary and Attorney for the Penn Guarantee Trust Co. He named it Lindenwold because on his way there he was reading a book in which a “Lindenwold” was mentioned (Lindenwold in German means “Linden Woods”). Mr. Bedford had planned to have Linden trees planted along the streets of the new town, but while he was away on other business, cheaper and more easily obtained trees were planted.

On April 23rd, 1929 Lindenwold became a borough.
