Geocache Description:

clear lock-n-lock

Cache placed with approval of Green Ridge State Forest manager.

Green Ridge State Forest is one of Maryland's largest state forests and consists of approximately 46,000 acres of pine, oak, and hickory forests. Recreational opportunities include camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, public shooting range, hunting, fishing, and paddling. The nearby C & O Canal (operated by the National Park Service) offers biking, hiking, and horseback riding opportunities. The state of Maryland obtained the first portions of GRSF in 1931, and has continued to manage the forest for many uses.

The village of Green Ridge included the area of the peninsula encircled by Kasecamp Road. This was the main headquarters for the Mertens’ Green Ridge Valley Orchard venture in the early 1900’s (which soon went bankrupt), and the location of Mertens Orchard Camp Number 1. This area also served as a stop for the Western Maryland Railroad, which reached Cumberland in 1906. Several rural families lived in and around the village of Green Ridge, as well as families who worked for the orchard company. The schoolhouse was located over the hill above Stickpile Tunnel, and was one of the last operating one room schoolhouses in the area. Stickpile Tunnel was supposedly named after a dead hobo who was buried in the area by being covered over with sticks. None of the buildings of the Green Ridge village, a town that began before the American Revolution and thrived until the 1930’s, remain.
