Geocache Description:

The Virginia State Parks Birding Adventure series ended on December 15, 2014. However, the park has adopted this cache so it will still be available to find. Prizes are no longer available for this series. Look for our new series, Virginia State Parks Civil War Adventure.

The Great Blue Heron is the largest Heron in North America growing to over 4 feet in height with a wing span averaging 6 feet! They look and sound like mini pterodactyls during takeoff making a low grunting sound. They are prominent along the shores of Lake Anna & often frequent the edges of Old Pond next to the Visitor Center. While searching for this cache, be sure to notice signs left behind by North America’s largest rodent. They too frequent this area and have created their own “cache” nearby (a food cache that is)!

To find Great Blue Herons scan shorelines, river banks, and the edges of marshes, estuaries, and ponds across much of the U.S. for this tall, slow-moving heron. These large shore birds also feed in meadows, farmland, and other open fields. Some colonies or “heronries” are found near developed areas; look for the herons’ bulky stick nests high in trees. And once you recognize their slow wing beats and massive silhouettes, you’ll start to notice these birds in flight high in the sky as well.

Original contents: log book, pen, VA State Park collector’s pin, NatureGator “gator”, VA State Stress Indicator Card, mini Frisbee, children’s sunglasses, VA State Park bracelet and Virginia State Park Bird Trading Cards.

When caching in any Virginia State Park; please stay on marked trails when possible, park in designated parking areas ONLY, always observe CITO and Leave No Trace practices & most of all - take time to enjoy & explore your natural and historical surroundings!
