December 10, 2009 by KendraH (2762 found) Greg and I were on a mission to get the 3.5/5 difficulty/terrain combo for my final square in the Well-rounded cacher "Fizzy" challenge. (visit link) This cache was the only 3.5/5 around for hundreds of miles that seemed possible this time of year. So we drove from Pasadena, got to the gate just before 3pm, and started hiking. It was less than 2 miles as the crow flies but we knew it would be much more on foot, so we only stopped for a few caches along the way. We found a shortcut trail that saved a lot of time, and got to this cache in less than 4 miles. Greg spotted the cache, and I dropped off a travel bug in it. Wow, I finished the Fizzy challenge! We celebrated briefly with a quick snack and a rest, then had to hurry back since the sun sets before 5pm these days. Unfortunately, we had such good luck with the first shortcut that we were tempted to try another shortcut, instead of retracing our steps along the perfectly good route we had taken on the way in. After a dead end and some bushwhacking that proved fruitless, we eventually found ourselves back on the main trail, and did some speed walking back to the car. Still, we finished more than an hour past sunset. I had a flashlight, since I always carry one, so that was fine. Greg walks much faster than I do when he's in a hurry, and so he walked ever further ahead, using his night vision rather than sharing my flashlight. That worked out fine. When he made a wrong turn, I was close enough to catch it before he disappeared from sight. We got back to the car after 8.4 miles of hiking in just under 3 hours, including the caching stops. We had only seen one other person on the trail all day, a motorcyclist. After that, there wasn't time to do the oldest cache in California until daylight, so we pitched our tents at the nearby Lake Morena. We were the only people camping there, I believe. I guess a weekday in December isn't very popular.
