Geocache Description:

All of these locations are within the city walls in the shadow of York Minster.

Go to the listed coordinates to start your journey.

1. York Minster

York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. It is the seat of the Archbishop of York and cathedral for the Diocese of York. Its formal title is The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. There are some fabulous stained glass windows including the famous Rose Window, which was restored following the fire of 1984. Inside the Minster are roof bosses designed by Blue Peter viewers replacing the ones destroyed in the fire.
Things you might not know about the Minster:-
Graduates of York St John University receive their degrees in the Minster in September each year.
In 2000 the Mystery Plays were performed in the Minster.
An In 2002 an Alpha Supper party was held in the Minster for 700 people.
For other information visit the Minster web site www.yorkminster.org It would be good to see your pictures of the Minster, the more unusual the better.

3. Pigs in York

Swinegate was the location of a pig market in medieval times it is now the place to find bars, wonderful cafes, and fashion boutiques.
Pigs can still be found there. Have a look on the walls in Swinegate for pig bricks, there are a few quite high up. How many can you count? (Just for fun) Put how many you find in your log! (N.B. no one seems to find them, but they are there, they are the size of a small red brick about 4 - 5 metres from the ground) The challenge is there, can you find one or more ????
Close by is Barley Hall, just down Coffee Lane – well worth a visit. This is a 14th century town house restored by the York Archaeological Trust
The co-ordinates lead you to the entrance of a bar called Oscars, look up and you will see four words carved into the stone to the right of "York Central Mission Hall". Count the number of letters in each word to give you -

5. ???

This was the medieval home of the Minster’s Vicars Choral till 1574 and it became a slum area. In the 1800s it became an orphanage/workhouse – York Industrial Ragged School. The Master was paid to collect waifs and strays and he kept the money they earned. Many of the children died of neglect and starvation, the bodies he locked up in a cupboard. When the stench became unbearable he would clear it out. When a harsh winter prevented burial for many months the master became convinced that he could hear the children’s screams from cupboard. He eventually went completely mad and ran through the school massacring the remaining children with a huge knife. He was discovered him next morning, whimpering amongst the bodies of the children, and sent to a lunatic asylum.
Some do say that the children can still be hear laughing and playing in this street, so maybe it is best to do this one during the day.
This house of prayer was consecrated in S T U V
