Geocache Description:

If you have seen an american action movie must you have heard about the navy SEALS? We have also had a navy seal base in Sweden! Did you know that?

Lets go back about 60 years in time...

The year is 1940 and it's winter. Hitler are invading a lot of countries in Europe. The Swedish Marine was afraid of the mighty german submarines and needed to find a solution how to find subs in the sea. The scientist Valdemar Fellenius sat one evening at a restaurant together with his former classmate Gunnar Boalt and thought about training seals to hunt down submarines in the Swedish archipelago. They both agreed that this was a crazy idea that might actually work!

They placed a lot of money in this project and they started to build a secret base on Gålö, and 19 seal babies was flown from Bottenviken to Gålö. They were transported in black plastic bags.

Soon they started to train the seals to locate submarines... After a while did the Swedish Marine became interested in this project, and Boalt and Fellenius arranged a demonstration with a real submarine, "Ulven". The seals all found the subs and showed the location of it. The Swedish Marine liked what they saw, and joined the project.

But they had big problems keeping this project secret, since barbwire, watch towers and armed guards are not a common view in Sweden... But they did fool the public about the purpose of the base. The year 1943 was the first time the seals were used in a real case. On the westcoast had Ulven crashed with a german mine and sunk, and the crew appeared to be still alive. But where was Ulven?? Fellenius jumped on an express train to Göteborg together with Gålös finest seal. The seal couldn't find the sub where the Marine thought the subs was. It turned out one week later that the submarine had sunk several kilometres away from where the first thought.

Now the seal project had big problems. Now the Marine realized that the submarines are operating at open sea, and the seals couldn't work at those locations! Year 1944 did the Gålö Seal base close, and the four remaining seals were donated to Skansen.

Since long time back are the barbwires at Gålö Seal Camp removed, and the only remaining items left are some poles and a mine nearby. Nowadays are there some buildings left that can be rented for accommodation.
