Geocache Description:

The Lakes Lookout

If you have a Wallowa-Whitman Forest Service map, the location for the cache is marked as recreation site #26. The container is a metal ammo container. On the hike back down I ran into a gentleman who asked me what remained of the lookout station. I'd been up here several times before and thought it was called the Lakes Lookout since it's a good place to look out and see a good portion of Northeastern Oregon. He informed me that there used to be a Forest Service fire lookout tower at the site that was decommissioned years ago and had been allowed to disintegrate. 8/27/2004: Since my original placement turned out to be the last place up on the summit to melt off, I moved the container to a new location. BTW, there's a rather tame mountain goat that's staked out the summit as her personal lookout spot. If you take children up there I'd warn them about trying to get too close. Even though it may seem quite docile, it's still a wild animal with a set of horns. 9/3/2011: Made a trip up to the cache to check it out since the last log was a DNF. Still there in the spot I left it. Stopped off at the Anthony Lakes campground on the way back to the freeway and found some interesting info about the Lookout posted on sign boards around the lake. Posted pics of the info on the Web page. 9/7/2014: Looks like a goat ate the lid. PLEASE don't leave any swag that would attract them. Put everything in a more "goat-proof" plastic bucket. Read the instructions on the lid before attempting to remove. It screws off. 9/1/2019: Replaced the plastic bucket with a metal ammo can. People seemed to have problems getting the lid back on the plastic bucket properly. Found some remnants of the old lookout station around the area and placed right on top of the hide to make it easier to find.
