This cache is located along a short road, now a trail, that
is the original Retsil Road. The best info I could find on this
location, is that it was the original road that led down to the
Retsil Veterans Home, and was where the Navy had placed housing in
the 1940's, for the influx of shipyard workers brought in to help
out with the war efforts of WWII. There was simply not enough room
in Bremerton to house the thousands of workers brought in, and this
is just one area that housing was built in Port Orchard. The
Parkwood area on top of Mile Hill was another, but there are new
homes that take over that area now.
There are still signs of the way things were, although small. With
a walk through the area you will of course see the road, but also;
striping of the street in spots, curbs, sidewalks, and even the old
sewer caps. If you wander around a bit, you may even notice that
that rocky leafy trail you are on is actually asphalt as well. All
this, for the most part, history that is unknown, in the middle of
town....what a pleasant surprise!
If you have any other history on this area, please do
share.Curious minds wanna know.
On to the cache.. The coordinates will take you to a cool
tree alongside of the original Retsil Road. Here you will find a
micro cache containing a log sheet. No room for a writing utensil
here, so you will need to bring your own, and be sure to rehide
carefully.
