Geocache Description:

Geocaching has reached kindergarten age!

Celebrate the technology that made the first cache - placed on 5/3/00 - possible by hunting this cache located near N42°22.685 W071°27.616.

If you read any article introducing geocaching (usually subtitled "High Tech Treasure Hunt"), there's likely to be a sentence that reads something like, "On May 1, 2000, President Clinton issued an executive order turning selective availability off, making geocaching possible." Along with budget surpluses and scandal ("I did not go geocaching with that woman, Miss Lewinsky!"), geocaching is a legacy of the Bubba administration.

"Selective Availability" meant that accuracy was limited to approximately one-hundred meters as opposed to the ten meter accuracy we now enjoy. Now that selective availability has been turned off, any miscreant with a cruise missile can hit the side of a barn (or find a geocache there ), rather than just target the general vicinity of the barnyard. Searching for this cache will allow you to appreciate the difference between SA "on" and SA "off."

Parking - N42°22.572 W071°27.325.

Cache - the coordinates in red above, indicate the center of the search area. The cache container is hidden within 100 meters of that location. The hiding spot is off the trail, but bushwhacking is not necessary. Thus far, it seems that successful finders have spent an average of thirty minutes searching - your mileage may vary.

Please leave the cache partially visible - as you found it.
DO NOT COVER THE CONTAINER COMPLETELY

After you've found the cache (or if you give up searching) the trail around the pond is a nice walk.

Good luck! Happy Birthday, Geocaching!
