Stefan Banic
Constructor, Inventor.
Banic was born in Nestich, Slovakia presently part of the town Smolenice. Failing to find a work in Slovakia he left for the USA. He settled in Geenville, PA. Having witnessed a tragic accident in 1912 had brought him to thinking about a design of a parachute device. Shortly after in 1913, he constructed his first parachute. Based on a principle similar to that of an umbrella, this device was operated by a system of springs. It was attached to the diver by straps over his chest and under his arms. On June 3, 1914 Banic personally tested his invention before representatives of the US Patent Office and US Air Force by diving from a 15 storey building in Washington. On August 25, 1914 after this and other dives - some of them from airplanes - US patent office finally accepted his invention and issued the patent number 1108484. Even though worldwide Banic had not been the first to invent a parachute, his inventing skills are an important part of scientific and technical legacy. Banic returned back to his homeland in 1921. He died here in his birthplace Nestich. Residents of this town created a remembrance room in the local community centre in his memory.

The distance to this tree is equal to the difference between Banic's year of death and year of birth multiplied by two and then subtracted from the last three digits of the Banic's patent number. The bearing to the tree equals to the difference between Banic's year of death and year of birth multiplied by eleven and then subtracted from the first four digits of Banic's patent number decreased by two.

Narodil sa na Slovensku v Neštichu (dnes miestna cast Smoleníc). Doma nenašiel prácu a preto odchádza do USA do Greenville v štáte Pensylvánia. V roku 1912 sa stáva svedkom tragickej nehody, ktorá ho otriasla do takej miery, že zacal rozmýšlat nad padákovou konštrukciou. V roku 1913 zostrojil prvý použitelný padák na princípe dáždnika, ktorý sa otváral sústavou niekolkých pružín a na telo letca bol upevnený pomocou popruhov v hrudnej casti pod ramenami. Dna 3. júna 1914 Štefan Banic osobne vyskúšal padák pred zástupcami Patentového úradu a letectva USA a zoskocil vo Washingtone zo strechy 15-poschodovej budovy. Potom nasledovali dalšie zoskoky aj z lietadla, až napokon 25. augusta 1914 vydal Americký patentový úrad vo Washingtone patent na Banicov padák pod císlom 1108484.
Aj ked Banicovmu padáku celosvetové prvenstvo nepatrí, jeho objavitelské schopnosti majú v dejinách vedy a techniky nemalý význam.
V roku 1921 sa Štefan Banic vrátil do vlasti, až napokon umrel v rodnom Neštichu, kde na jeho pocest bola v kultúrno-spolocenskom dome zriadená pamätná izba.
