Geocache Description:

The AAC Rescue Cache Cache is located off a steep hiking trail leading to the world famous Monkey Face in Smith Rock State Park.

The AAC Rescue Cache Cache is located off a steep hiking trail leading to the world famous Monkey Face in Smith Rock State Park. Leave your rig near the State Park automatic parking pay station. It will cost you $3.00 for the day.

Find the trail down to the wooden bridge across the wild and scenic Crooked River. You have the choice of going up the steep and exposed Misery Ridge Trail or turning left down by the riverside. Bike riders can enjoy riding the river trail but must carry their bike the entire Misery Ridge Trail.

Do not hunt this cache if there is ice on the State Park trail down to the bridge unless you have instep cleats for your hiking shoes. Just enjoy the park and return on a sunny day.

Take the steep trail to the right off the river trail at NAD27 UTM Zone 10, 647,720 meters E of the west boundary of Zone 10 and 4,914,016 meters N of the Equator. You will see Monkey Face as you follow the trail up to the Cache.

Since the Satellite radio signals bounce off the huge rock faces looming above you, the coordinates are meant to get you to the AAC Rescue Cache, not to the Geocache. Catch your breath, read the commemorative plaque, enjoy the view of the crooked river and the world class climbing venues on the Monkey.

The cache is offset from the Cache. From the Cache, measure up the trail two Flexi 2-5 Standard retractable dog leash lengths (about 16 feet each) to a general point at the edge of the trail as it goes up hill. Then carefully clamber west on the rocks to a point that intersects with a line bearing 346 degrees True, from the north corner of the Cache. You should be able to see a bit of the cache box from your position on the rocks. If cachers leave geo-tracks on the soft soil around this cache, we will have to
remove it. This is a Leave-No-Trace cache.

After you log in and trade your goods, you will have two choices. You can continue up the trail to the top of the plateau and descend by the park’s Misery Ridge Trail to the bridge and up to your rig, or you can retrace your steps down to the river and back to the bridge. The ground distance taking the river trail back is about 2 miles, 1,733 feet to the parking lot, descending 648 feet and climbing 523 feet at a total average grade of 6%.
