Geocache Description:

Geocaching 101 is my series of caches near Highway 101

Take a 1.5 mile round trip stroll on a nice trail next to Goldsborough River. There used to be a dam here that Simpson Logging Company built and then abandoned. The dam was removed and the river was restored and the salmon are coming back. There are a few interpretive signs that talk about salmon and wetlands on this trail.

Removal of the dam was a joint effort of Simpson Loggers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state and federal fish and wildlife departments and the Squaxin Island Indian Tribe.

The placement of numerous concrete weirs and anchored woody debris re-created a natural (but ugly) fall. The project was completed in 2002 with planting of native trees and shrubs along the banks.

Dam removal opened more than 30 miles of excellent coho salmon habitat. Streambank, wetland and new and old stands of second-growth timber provide habitat for myriads of birds as well: warblers, woodpeckers and kingfishers abound.

To walk in, drive west from Shelton on Railroad Avenue, go under the Highway 101 overpass and take the first right, Hulbert Road. Turn left at the car agency and park in front of the Orange gate. Don't block the gated access road. A few hundred feet in, a path to the right leads to the stream bank, later rejoining the main route along the stream.

There are two other geocaches on this trail, one is my Geocaching 101 nightcache and the other is a very challenging multi-cache placed by Cloquallum Guy.

Permission has been obtained from Simpson Logging Company for placement of caches here.

I won this cache container at the 2006 Spring Fling hosted by Shop99er in Port Orchard. When I saw this ammo can on the prize table I picked it as my first choice of prizes if I were to win a prize. I did not know that it had stuff inside it and was all ready to be placed. Thanks to "Marcus A" for putting together a lovely cache and container.
