Owl's Field
My wife and I grew up in the Berks County and have very fond memories of extinct sites around the county. This is the fifth in a series of traditional caches that might bring back fond memories of long gone sites around our county. Many of us have passed these locations from the past with little regard to the lost local commercial history.
My grandparents used to live on Reading Blvd, so the Owl’s field was a great place to play when visiting them. When I was younger, I would ride my Big Wheel down Harrison Ave and then play on the playground equipment. As I got older, I looked forward to the Apple Dumpling Festival with all the food and rides. As the homes were built below Reading Blvd, towards the Owl’s Field, we would ride our bikes in the construction areas jumping dirt mounds and kicking up rooster tails of dust. As I progressed into my teens, the festival pageant became a better draw than the food or rides.
The Apple Dumpling Festival has since moved to Passed Berks’ Past #4. Now the area occupied by the West Side Regional Emergency Management Agency.
The baseball field has undergone many changes and is now rated one of the best amateur playing fields. The Red Caboose Park now meets the needs of the community with volleyball & basketball courts, playground, pavilion and other amenities. Please hide the cache as well as you found it. Beware of muggles as their volume changes depending on the season. Obey the park hours of dawn to dusk.
