We thought it was time to have a Sudoku puzzle cache in our area
and, as Mrs B can never resists a good pun, Sudbrook seems the
ideal locality. Recommended parking at the given co-ords above:
Turn right across the railway line, down the narrow road beside the
village shop Post Office. Park by the small playground where there
is also a decorative map of the area. This area is close to a 20ft
drop onto the R Severn foreshore, so please keep young children
close and take care!
Sudbrook has many interesting features including the remains of an
Iron Age fort, ruins of an old chapel, great views of the Second
Severn Crossing and last, but certainly not least, the pumping
station for the Severn Railway Tunnel which was built by Thomas
Walker and completed in 1885. The tunnel project was almost stopped
during construction in 1879 when they broke through into the Great
Spring which flooded the workings. It was eventually shored up but
two pumping stations were built on either side of the river. The
large building here at Sudbrook originally housed 6 Cornish beam
pumping engines. These were replaced in the 1960’s with electric
pumps. These still pump some 60 million litres (some 13 million
gallons) of water a day out of the tunnel. This water was used
extensively in the Llanwern steel works and is also fed into the
normal water supply. The strange building with a curved metal roof
houses a fan for ventilating the tunnel.
The cache is easy to find..... once you've solved the puzzle. For
those who never done a Sudoku before, all you have to do is
complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains
the digits 1 to 9.

Use the numbers from the completed grid to solve the cache
co-ordinates:
N 51° 34. (A7+D6)(F5)(A8-F2) W 02° 42.
(D5)(D2+C9)(H7-F6)
The 3 star difficulty reflects the effort required to solve the
puzzle. Please do it the traditional way, using a pencil and
brainpower: Anyone using a "cheat" will have their stars forcibly
ripped from their epaulettes
For those who'd like a circular walk of about an hour, go back up
the road towards Portskewett and just before crossing the railway
line take the signed footpath to the right across the fields. This
will bring you to the site of the old Portskewett station, from
there you can turn right up Sunnycroft, then onto the road to Black
Rock picnic site and back to Sudbrook along the river bank.
