Introduction to Geocaching Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

NorthWes: Eagle618 sums it up in her log from 5-18 - "Let's go 'caching!" Folks from Geocache Alaska had a great time putting on this class for Shannon K from Muni Parks - thanks for inviting us - we look forward to meeting our new geocachers out on the trails this summer!

Great article in today's Anchorage Daily News titled "Satellite sleuths are playing on a global game board" - you can see it at:

I understand KIMO13 is tentatively scheduled to air Megan and Mike's interviews from 5-18 on Tuesday the 23rd of May's newscast...

Thanks again to all who helped in the role of 'field assistants' - you were the key to making this a success, as it's the individual mentoring that helped class members get past that initial contact with the GPS.

Geocache Description:

www.geocachealaska.org

10:00am Saturday April 22nd...

Learn how to geocache during this Anchorage Parks & Recreation Activity (taught by local geocachers) at the Kincaid Chalet, 9401 West Raspberry Rd., Anchorage AK. MOA Parks Activity Fee $10.00 per person.

We begin at 10am indoors, learning to find geocaches online, load coordinates into GPS units, and prepare to go afield in search of the cache itself. Gear, travel bugs, geocoins and other aspects of the game will be covered. Take-home handouts will cover details step by step, assisting in exploring beyond the introductory level.

By 11am we'll move outdoors with GPS units in hand to begin our journey of discovery... ending with the 'find' of an actual geocache located close nearby the chalet. The route will include several waypoints where cachers will encounter different types of cache containers. A team of experienced field assistants will be on hand to ensure everyone gets as much personal attention as necessary to make their first geocaching expedition a success! Our training session will be completed by noon.

Follow-on group caching sessions will occur on Thursday evenings at 7pm for the next four weeks. These evening sessions will help new cachers gain confidence navigating across Kincaid Park's 1,400 acre 'backcountry' in search of the many geocaches hidden in the park. Each small group (led by an experienced cacher) will finish their 'hunt' by 9pm.

Participants must bring a handheld GPS unit (a team can share), spare batteries, footwear & clothing suitable for a blustery spring day at windy Kincaid Park. Geocaching is an all-weather all-season outdoor activity involving the entire family - however, for this Saturday training session please leave dogs at home. Well-behaved dogs on leash are encouraged to come along on our Thursday evening jaunts!

This training event is followed at noon by Geocache Alaska's 2006 Kincaid Park CITO Event (CITO: 'Cache In - Trash Out'), where volunteers will pick up a winter's accumulation of trash in the fields and along the trails around the Kincaid Chalet. Special door prizes and awards, snacks and water, and a good time will be provided. Check out the CITO event listing here for more information on how to lend a hand in keeping our park a pretty place to visit. The 2005 event filled nearly 3 dumpsters with trash collected by more than two dozen geo-volunteers!

PLEASE NOTE - place travel bugs and geocoins in the CITO event listing only.
All TBs and geocoins in this event listing are placed by NorthWes for training purposes, and will be available to log at the CITO event.
