Geocache Description:

A medium-difficulty hike in the hills above Cal State San Bernardino.

After we located the Seventeen Palms Oasis cache yesterday, we thought that the surroundings looked 'inviting', so we decided we'd plant our own cache in the area (you can tell that we're hopelessly obsessed Geocachers by the fact that we routinely carry ready-assembled cache containers around with us at all times... just in case we come across that 'perfect spot'). Hopefully, the relative proximity of the two caches will serve to increase the number of visits to both. This is a neat area, though for me (Brian) it has the significance of being the place where I ate it BIG-TIME on a road bike back in 1984 (right into a parked motorcycle at +20 MPH...ouch!) so I wince a little every time I pass that particular spot in the road.

On this one, you'll be dealing with a bit of an elevation gain (about 500' over all from the suggested parking coordinates) over the course of the one mile hike. On a clear day, you'll even be treated to nice bird's-eye view of the campus of CSUSB. Plus... you can check out the remnants of the (apparently) once-thriving nudist resort (at least that's what I've heard it was) tucked away in a little vale a ways up the hill. Not to worry, though... the naked people are long gone & you'll likely have the whole area to yourself (except for the occasional dirt bike riders... all of whom seem to be fully clothed).

UPDATE 11-04-2003... after receiving reports of this cache's demise (due to the recent fires), we thought we'd take the opportunity to go up and perform whatever maintanence was required to get the thing back in order. The darkened, charred earth of the area created an eerie presence; like strolling over a lunar landscape (albeit a lunar landscape with burnt tree sticking out of it). Considering the amount of devistation, we knew the cache had to be in pretty bad shape; we were right... what a mess! Every single item that was made of paper was singed or completely burnt. Anything made of plastic had melted to the bottom of the ammo box . About the only thing that survived in anything close to decent condition was the logbook. The box itself was in pretty lousy shape, so we swapped it out with a nice new one of the same color & size. Oh yeah, Brian had to scrape the remains of a bunny rabbit who 'thought' it's found safe refuge from the flames by ducking behind the ammo can. Nothing from the original cache was worth transfer to the new one, so here's the new contents...

a staple remover
a couple of McDonald's toys
a Hot Wheels car
some post-its
2 sparkley pencils
a pack of tissue
2 yellow golf balls
3 bouncey balls
5 O.H.D. cache-cards

THE ORIGINAL EPILOGUE FROM JANUARY 2003..."We hid this one the other day, but annoying problems with our GPS receiver caused us to doubt the reading that we had taken, so we left it there & decided not to post it to the site until we were able to go back out (as I did this morning) to verify it's true location (our GPS problem having been overcome). The 'hint' includes a waypoint where you'll want to turn off the paved road, plus the coordinates of the spot we parked. Have fun!"
