A Nora do Tomilhal Traditional Geocache

Nora é um engenho ou aparelho para tirar água de poços ou cisternas. É constituído por uma roda com pequenos reservatórios ou alcatruzes. Possui uma haste horizontal acoplada a um eixo vertical que por sua vez está ligado a um sistema de rodas dentadas. Este sistema faz circular um conjunto de alcatruzes entre o fundo do poço e a superfície exterior. Os alcatruzes descem vazios, são enchidos no fundo do poço, regressam e quando atingem a posição mais elevada começam a verter a água numa calha que a conduz ao seu destino. O ciclo de ida e volta dos alcatruzes ao fim do poço para tirar água mantém-se enquanto se fizer rodar a haste vertical e o poço tiver água. Tradicionalmente as noras são engenhos de tracção animal. Estes engenhos vieram em muitos casos substituir a picota ou cegonha anteriormente utilizados como engenhos principais para tirar água na Península Ibérica onde se pensa que tenham sido introduzidos pelos árabes.

Nora is a device or machine to draw water from wells or cisterns. It consists of a small wheel with reservoirs or buckets. It has a horizontal rod coupled to a vertical shaft which in turn is connected to a system of sprockets. This system circulates a set of buckets between the bottom and outer surface. The bucket down empty, are filled in the deep end, and return when they reach the highest position begin to pour the water into a gutter that leads to your destination. The return cycle and around the bucket at the end of the well to draw water remains as if you rotate the vertical shaft and the well has water. Traditionally, daughters are animal traction devices. These devices come in many cases replace the pillory or stork previously used as main engines to draw water in the Iberian Peninsula where it is thought to have been introduced by the Arabs.
