This cache is placed on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. This is the third in a series of caches on the campus, designed to give you a tour of the beautiful campus while also helping you make some quick and easy finds.
From here you can see the Towers Complex, Brandt Music Hall, Carnahan Hall, Rosemary Berkel Crisp Hall of Nursing,, and the Serena Building.
Serena Building:
Built between 1905 and 1909, Serena Building was named after Southeast’s eighth president, Joseph A. Serena and was originally built as the campus’s manual training facility. The building is often recognized for the large clock tower.
Carnahan Hall:
Carnahan Hall is the oldest building on campus, originally constructed in 1901 as a science building. In 1998, the building was named after congressman and US ambassador Albert Carnahan. Albert was a Southeast alum and father to the late Governor Mel Carnahan.
Brandt Hall Of Music:
Construction began under President Walter Winfield Parker, but after suffering a stroke he was unable to see the completion of the building. The University’s 10th President Mark Scully completed the construction. The building was named after J. Clyde Brandt, a longtime professor of music at Southeast.
Rosemary Berkel Crips Hall of Nursing:
Crisp Hall used to be the University High School, a lab for secondary education majors.
The steep hill above the Towers complex is known as “Cardiac Hill”. Formerly, the football team sprinted up it during training, and they often complained at the end of the day that they felt like they were going to have a heart attack from the strenuous trek up the hill. You do NOT need to go up or down Cardiac Hill to access the cache. However, it might be fun to try a down and up!
At the top of “Cardiac Hill,” there is a tree upon which students have placed their used chewing gum for many years, earning it the title of “Gum Tree.” The original Gum Tree died and was replaced in 1989, and students have been honoring its predecessor with their chewing gum ever since. Feel free to make a donation to the Gum Tree, and be sure to post a picture of you and your gum-donation! The coordinates listed above take you to the Gum Tree. To find the cache, you must complete the following:
N 37 18.ABC W 089 31.DEF
Find the number of letters for:
A = Punk rock band who recorded “Stuck With Me”
B = Lead singer of Irish band who recorded “Stuck In A Moment”, then subtract 3
C = “Life In Cartoon Motion” artist who recorded “Stuck In The Middle”
D = Scottish rock band who recorded “Stuck In The Middle With You”, then subtract 6
E = Former member of “Commodores” who recorded “Stuck On You”, then subtract 11
F = Country group who recorded “Stuck Like Glue”
Coordinate check: A + B + C = 13 D + E + F = 17
The cache is a micro. You don't need to leave the pavement, and it is completely wheelchair accessible. Stealth is required, although the location of the cache is not an excessively heavy traffic area for students. Please bring a pen or pencil to sign the log, and please put it back in the exact same spot where you retrieved it. Permission to place this cache was given by the Director of Facilities Management.
