How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This offset multi-cache is designed to provide a tour of landmarks and other points of interest on or near Main Street in Russellville, AR. The coordinates provided above are for the starting point. The search consists of 13 steps that use math problems to determine the next set of coordinates. A good scientific calculator and a math handbook are recommended. Save your answers at each step, as the solutions may be used again at another step.

The cache located at the final step is a magnetic micro that contains only a logsheet. So please bring your own writing utensil.

A big “Thank You” goes to the Director of Main Street Russellville, for suggesting many of the points on this tour, and for approving the hiding spot for the cache.

To help you check your answer at each step, a “checksum” value is provided. To find the checksum of your answer, you must reduce your answer to a single digit. First, add the individual digits of your answer together. If the resulting number is a single digit value, that is your checksum. If the resulting number has more than one digit, then add its digits again to get a single digit value.

Example: Suppose your answer is 25. Sum the digits, 2+5, to get 7. That is your checksum.

Another example: Suppose your answer is 585. Sum the individual digits, 5+8+5, to get 18. This is not a single digit value, so sum the individual digits again, 1+8, to get a checksum value of 9.

Got it? Now you’re on your own! Good luck!

If you attempt this cache, please “log your visit” by leaving a note letting me know how far you’ve gotten. This will let me know that there are geocachers out there at least trying to find this one.  Also, don’t be afraid to log a DNF! I will be happy to help you out with a clue or two if I see your DNF. In fact, I will no longer provide anyone with clue until you first log a DNF!

=========================================================

Step 1: Start at the posted coordinates, N35 16.696 W93 07.027.

You will be in front of a local landmark, once a major stopping point for travelers heading east or west on Rt. 64 before Interstate 40 was built. Local legend says that Elvis stopped by here once. Look around. This establishment is famous for two things. What are they? The number of letters in your answer is variable A.

B = (A*2)*33 – 4 (checksum = 8)

===========================================================

Step 2: N35 16.921 W93 08.B

Watch out for the guards at this landmark. There is a plaque here with a name. The number of letters in the middle name is variable C.

D = (C^3)-15 (Checksum = 4)

===========================================================

Step 3: N35 16.752 W93 08.D

This building houses offices for a major organization in Arkansas and was named after a former supervisor. How many years did this person serve as supervisor of the organization? Your answer will be variable E.

F = 0.5*Int(e^(E-12))+98 (Checksum = 1)

===========================================================

Step 4: N35 16.717 W93 08.F

What year was this building built? Your answer will be variable G.

H = Int (ln (G/10) * 130) - 1 (Checksum = 4)

===========================================================

Step 5: N35 16.H W93 08.184

Find the inscription that mentions a Mr. Mellon. The number of times that the letter “a” appears in the inscription is variable I.

J = I^2

K = Int (sin (J degrees) * 211) (Checksum = 6)

===========================================================

Step 6: N35 16.709 W93 08.K

What is a royal price for a pair of shoes? Your answer will be variable L.

M = (L + 0.5)! + 8 (Checksum = 5)

===========================================================

Step 7: N35 16.668 W93 08.0M

Look for the date of a tragic event. If the date is expressed in the format of “mm/dd/yy”, what is the sum mm + dd + yy? Your answer will be variable N.

P = Int (N / pi)

Q = cos (P degrees) * 10 –0.345 (Round to 3 decimal places)
(Checksum of decimal portion only = 6)

===========================================================

Step 8: N35 16.694 W93 Q

The number of years after this building was built that it was renovated is variable R.

S = (R * pi) – (2*M)-14.92 (Checksum = 2)

===========================================================

Step 9: N35 16.710 W93 08.S

The year that disaster struck downtown Russellville is variable T.

U = radius of a circle with area T.

V= U/3 – 0.025 (checksum of 3 digit decimal portion = 5)

===========================================================

Step 10: N35 16.738 W93 0V

Yet another old familiar landmark. The year of establishment is variable W.

X = Length of the base of a triangle with a height of (A+10) and an area equal to (W-8) (Checksum = 9)

===========================================================

Step 11: N35 16.807 W93 08.X

Find the date on the cornerstone (variable Y) and the post number (variable Z).

a = Y – (Z*10) – 2

b = 0.5*a – (number of zeroes in a quadrillion) (checksum = 5)

===========================================================

Step 12: N35 16.b W93 08.188

Find the water source. Behind the one stand the two. Between the two are the three. The number of points among the three is variable c.

d = c + Z + I

e = Int (Volume of a sphere with radius d)

f = first three digits of e

g = second three digits of e

h = f + E – 5 (checksum = 4)

i = g – (2*D) + (R-7) (checksum = 8)

===========================================================

Step 13: N35 16.h W93 08.i

Finally! The cache! Please remove it carefully from its hiding spot. Also, place it back exactly as you found it, so that others may have the same challenge.
