Duchessa Traditional Cache

Per raggiungere il Lago della Duchessa (m 1788), si parte dal piccolo abitato di Cartore (m 944), frazione del Comune di Borgorose in provincia di Rieti, si percorre il Vallone di Fua ed il Vallone del Cieco e si arriva al lago superando un dislivello complessivo di 850 metri.
Per la salita sono necessarie circa tre ore a piedi (per la discesa calcolare un'ora in meno).

Cartore si raggiunge attraverso una strada sterrata di 4 Km che inizia all'incirca al Km 66,700 della SS 578.
Il punto in cui la strada bianca per Cartore si immette sulla statale si trova a circa un chilometro dal casello Valle del Salto della A24 Roma-L'Aquila.
All'uscita dal casello si gira a sinistra lungo la strada che si incrocia (direzione Avezzano) e dopo un paio di curve, appena inizia un tratto rettilineo della statale, si scorge sulla sinistra la deviazione per Cartore (la sterrata, attraverso un piccolo tunnel, passa quasi subito sotto l'autostrada).
Si può parcheggiare lungo la sterrata proprio all'inizio dell'abitato di Cartore, poco prima della curva dov'è il cartello col nome del piccolo borgo montano, dove una pista in leggera salita incrocia la sterrata (m 951).

A piedi si inizia a percorrere la pista (sulla destra si scorge la prima casa di Cartore, circondata da terreno coltivato e recintato) che attraversa in salita un prato e dopo pochi minuti raggiunge il cartello che indica l'inzio della Riserva Naturale. Ci si immette in salita in un'altra strada sterrata proveniente dal centro di Cartore e quasi subito si raggiunge l'inizio del sentiero (l'itinerario è contrassegnato come 2D sulla cartina escursionistica scala 1:25000 "I sentieri montani del gruppo Velino-Sirente" a cura della Sezione di Avezzano del Club Alpino Italiano - Edizioni Il Lupo & Co.).

L'inizio del sentiero è impressionante: la traccia si insinua nella stretta forra tra due verticali pareti rocciose, in una vera e propria spaccatura della montagna, e percorre con numerosi tornanti il fondo del Vallone di Fua.
La salita in questo tratto iniziale non è particolarmente faticosa, anche perchè si svolge quasi completamente all'ombra delle pareti rocciose e nel bosco.
Segue un tratto quasi pianeggiante sempre ombreggiato dove la valle si allarga leggermente, anche se da ogni lato incombono le pareti rocciose.
Alla fine, dove la valle si restringe nuovamente, bisogna affrontare il tratto più faticoso e impegnativo.
La salita si fa molto ripida ed il sentiero, sempre ben marcato, risale il fianco della montagna attraverso una serie di cenge a tratti esposte (in alcuni punti bisogna superare dei gradini rocciosi dove può essere utile aiutarsi con le braccia) ma alla portata di qualsiasi buon escusionista..
Si supera il punto più stretto attraverso una cengia quasi pianeggiante (Passo di Fabiano) scavata nella roccia esposta a destra (un paio di metri di salto).
Il fondo del sentiero in questo tratto è di roccia viva e quindi bisogna fare molta attenzione in caso di pioggia.
Terminata la parte più difficile dell'itinerario, si attraversa (sempre in ripida salita) la faggeta del Vallone del Cieco fino a sbucare sui verdi prati tra la cresta sommitale del Monte Morrone (di fronte sulla sinistra) e lo stupendo versante Ovest del Murolungo (sulla destra), dove si può osservare in successione (dal basso in alto) la fascia boscosa, la zona dei pascoli e le rocce intorno alla cima.
Da quando si esce all'aperto la direzione è intuitiva, visto che in fondo all'orizzonte visivo si intuisce la conca in cui è situato il lago.
La traccia lungo il prato raggiunge una serie di piccoli edifici in muratura (in località Le Caparnie all'incirca tra m 1680 e m 1730), utilizzati dai pastori di Santa Anatolia nel periodo estivo.
Il primo di questi edifici è accessibile e può essere utilizzato dagli escursionisti in caso di maltempo o per pernottare (l'interno è spoglio ad eccezione di un camino, un tavolo di legno con panche per sedersi ed un paio di reti metalliche senza materassi).
Il secondo è fornito di acqua potabile (che proviene dalla soprastante Fonte di Salomone, situata a m 1836) e si può chiedere al pastore (che talvolta vende ricotta e formaggio agli escursionisti di passaggio) di potersi dissetare.
Alle spalle dell'ultimo edificio si continua a camminare sui prati e, costeggiando delle collinette erbose, si entra in una valletta adiacente a quella ben più ampia che accoglie il lago.
Un ultimo tratto in leggera salita sui prati e finalmente ci si affaccia (m 1800 circa) sulla vasta conca in cui è situato il Lago della Duchessa, che si può osservare dall'alto in tutta la sua estensione prima di raggiungere in discesa le sue rive (m 1788).
Nel periodo estivo il livello dell'acqua, sempre torbida e melmosa, si abbassa e si possono facilmente scorgere mandrie di bovini ed equini che fanno il bagno, a cui si uniscono pecore e capre condotte al lago dai pastori del luogo.

Effettuare questa escursione con condizioni meteo ottimali, in periodi estivi o primaverili, ricordandosi che il tempo cambia molto rapidamente in alta quota. Non bisogna dimenticare una buona scorta d'acqua, berretti e creme per il sole e bisogna anche fare attenzione alle mosche fastidiose (alcune pungono come i tafani) che d'estate si possono trovare sia a Cartore dove si parcheggia sia lungo le sponde del lago.

The climb is very steep and the trail, always well marked, dates from the side of the mountain through a series of ledges at times exposed (in some points must overcome the rocky steps where it can be useful to help with the arms) but the extent of any escusionista good ..
It exceeds the narrowest point through a cengia almost flat (Pass Fabiano) of rocks exposed to the right (a couple of metres head).
The bottom of the trail in this stretch of rock is alive and therefore must be very careful in case of rain.
