The numbers are displayed in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park located behind the center field wall and are placed in chronological order, beginning with Lou Gehrig's number 4. This number was retired soon after Gehrig left baseball on July 4, 1939, the same day he gave his famous farewell speech. His was the first number retired in Major League Baseball history. On game days, Monument Park opens with the gates and remains accessible until 45 minutes prior to the game start time.
