Geocache Description:

"The river is alive. It is an essential part of our lives. When it is vibrant and healthy, our well being is preserved. We must heal and protect this precious resource, not just for our own tribal treaty rights, but because it's a wise and respectful thing to do for everyone who lives here." -- from Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians Natural Resource Department Website, www.stillaguamish.nsn.us

CITO in the rain!

So it rained . . . but that didn't prevent us from having fun! We found lots of interesting garbage (thankfully no sharps or adult material that I'm aware of) including a bikini top, a newspaper box, a set of very nice wooden table legs, a component stereo, various articles of clothing, the obligatory tire, a barbecue, a variety of weird stuff, and four unopened beers! Who'd have thought! (No, we didn't keep the beer!) I'm so thankful that so many people came despite the weather. I think we did good.

But I've got to make sure certain people get thanks. They are:
  • Celtic Cacher Clan for making sure finders of garbage were rewarded for their meritorious finds. Awards included large, unusual, funny and other assorted items.
  • geobells for the wonderful donations to the raffle, including five t-shirts customed sized to the winner and two nylon packs. I was truly touched to see them customized to this event.
  • Lizzy (dear Lizzy!) for donating a stocked ammo box, including an FTF prize, ready to be placed. And for the food for our impromptu picnic in the rain. Thank goodness it wasn't doughnuts!
  • WDFW's Kye Iris and Robert Lantiegne for putting up with my questions, acquiescing to my requests, and letting me do it my way.
  • WSGA for three WSGA lanyards for the raffle.
But, most importantly, my most heartfelt and grateful thanks go to all of you who came (with your beloved critters) and joined me in the rain to do a little good. Without all of you, it wouldn't have happened. Thank you.

The Stillaguamish River in Snohomish County is a favorite recreational locale for many of us. In addition to geocaching, activities persued in the area include camping, swimming, fishing, boating, festivals, family gatherings, rock skipping, hiking, dog walking . . . the list could go on forever. In the course of these activities, we sometimes get careless and forget to take the care we should. The time is here for geocachers to help give back.

Just east of the privately owned Blue Stilly Park is a WDFW Recreational Access Area Site officially called Stroze (Blue Stilly), but known to the locals as Big Rock, because of the large erratic in the river at that location. It is this publicly owned property (and the dirt road leading to it) that we will be CITOing. Litter has always been a huge problem here, and different officials from WDFW have mentioned to me that is is by far the biggest problem access site for them out of the over 120 sites in Region Four.

When? Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. rain or shine, with an optional BYOF(ood) Picnic to follow at about noon on the 'beach'

Where? Stroze (Blue Stilly) WDFW Access site at N48 11.864, W122 11.319. Picnic will be at about N48 11.335 W122 11.235

Who? You (of course!), your family, your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers -- pretty much anybody for the most part!

What is Provided? Free parking pass while there; nitrile non-latex, powder-free (like rubber) gloves; garbage bags; hand sanitizer; paper towels; bottled water; raffle tickets for prizes . . . all while supplies last.

What to Bring? These items will not be provided and are not required, but might be a good idea: work clothes, heavy gloves or dish-washing rubber gloves, trash grabbers or litter sticks, boots, rain gear if it looks like rain, family radios, your picnic lunch, beach/camp chair, beach blanket, sunscreen if it looks like it might be sunny, TP?

Other Things to Know:
  • When you post your 'Will Attend' note, for planning purposes please indicate how many will be in your party.
  • Please make sure to see me for parking arrangements. The fine for not displaying the appropriate document approaches $200.
  • Please note that the facilities here are non-existent.
  • Parents bringing young children with them are requested to keep a close eye on them as they participate.
  • Travel bugs are always welcome.
  • A variety of prizes may be awarded, including (but not limited to) FTF Honors, the most unusual piece of garbage found, the most garbage found, and/or the prettiest piece of garbage found.
  • There will be a raffle at the end of the CITO. You must be present to win. Raffle tickets will not be sold -- they must be earned. Each participant earns one automatically. Others will be awarded for a variety of meritorious acts, to be determined by an impartial panel of anonymous judges. Prize donations will be gladly accepted and will quite probably garner an additional raffle ticket. :-)

So, come join us . . . earn a smiley, maybe earn a new icon (you'll need it for GC13P6B), celebrate the upcoming Fall Equinox (9/22), and generally have a good time. Remember, it's always more fun to pick up litter with friends than alone. See you there!
