This cache can be found in 42 locations in the United States.
The Merci Train was a train of 49 French railroad boxcars filled with tens of thousands of gifts of gratitude from French citizens. This was a gift of appreciation for the more than 700 American boxcars of relief goods sent to them by individual Americans in 1948. The Merci Train arrived in New York Harbor on February 3rd, 1949 and each of the 48 American states at that time received one of the gift laden boxcars. The 49th boxcar was shared by Washington D.C. and the Territory of Hawaii.
We came across our state's boxcar on a recent caching trip. We came home, researched it and then wanted to share the interesting history with others. For more information go to this wonderful website: http://www.rypn.org/Merci
There are 42 of the boxcars still in existence. To claim a find you must be the first to locate one of them. We will consider logs about the seven lost cars if they contain more information than the above website and are backed up with appropriate sources.
To log your find you must upload a photo of the Merci Boxcar with you and your GPSr, report the coordinates where the photo was taken and the location (city, state, etc.) and tell which state that car represented.
You must take the photo for this cache - old vacation photos and photos downloaded from the web don't count. You may only log this cache once, and can't log a boxcar that's already been logged. Once all remaining boxcars have been logged we will archive this cache.
Logs without coordinates and photos will be deleted without question.
