Like the Craignish Peninsula in Argyll, the Isle of Arran has its
fair share of Iron Age hill forts although most of them are to be
found in the southern half of the island including the
spectacularly situated Drumadoon, at Blackwaterfoot. However as I
sailed back down Loch Fyne from the event, on the CalMac ferry
Loch Riddon from Tarbart, this location caught my eye. With
memories of driving rain, dripping trees, rhododendron thickets and
spectacular views this seemed the perfect spot. You can almost
imagine some Dal Riata Scott from the Dark Age keeping an eye on
passing Pictish traders from his look out high over Kilbrannan
Sound.
The cache is not hidden in or close to any of the
archeological structures and should be fairly easy to find as
it is hidden inside a brick. Enjoy the climb up from
Colliemor and see if you can spot any of the small platforms where
iron was smelted in bloomeries during the Middle Ages.
