This cache is located near the edge of Walter C. Pierce
Community Park (DC Dept. of Parks & Recreation) above Rock
Creek Park (NPS). The shortest route to the cache is down the Snake
Hill Trail behind the off-leash dog run in Walter C. Pierce
Community Park. It can also be accessed by following the trail from
the US Park Police Training Center/Edgewater Stable (please be
mindful of reserved parking in this location). A third option is
the Rock Creek park trail that goes through the zoo. At the south
gate (near the Calvert Street bridge) follow the trail OVER the
mouth of the tunnel. The cache is in a clear, rubbermaid
containter.
If you have some spare time in the area, please help with the
CITO efforts! This area is usually littered with trash which needs
to be picked up, and every little bit helps.
The part of the park where the cache is located was formerly a
busy African American cemetery where 7000 people were buried
between 1870-1890 by the Colored Union Benevolent Association. If
you see bones or other evidence of human remains, please do not
disturb them. Anthropologists from Howard University are conducting
a noninvasive archaeological survey in the area.
(More information)
It is suggested that you do not attempt to visit this
cache alone after dark.
NOTE: The cache location appears to be
within NPS boundaries on some online maps and even the NPS's own
Rock Creek Park map, but if you go to the location you will find
that it clearly lies outside the NPS boundary line surveying disks
set in the ground. There is also some speculation that it is
possible the cache actually lies on the grounds of the National
Zoo, since their fence does not strictly follow the boundary line,
but there is no confirmation at this time. If you have any
questions about the cache's location meeting geocaching.com listing
guidelines, please contact the cache owner and/or local cache
reviewer. Oops, not so much true, see archive
note!
