Geocache Description:

Near the Oldham county courthouse - the midpoint of Route 66.

Built in 1924 this filling station is one of the oldest buildings in Vega, Texas. When Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 this Magnolia service station stood ready to serve its travelers. Later in 1937 when the highway was paved and realigned through Vega it no longer took motorists directly in front of the station. However the station could be easily seen from the highway and continued to serve customers for more than two decades as a gas station.

After the last gas was pumped at this station it has served other uses, one of which was to house the barber shop from 1953 until 1965.

The original gas pumps are long gone, the covered drive thru had been removed and the building was in a state of disrepair for years but local residents have begun a project to restore the station to its original appearance so that it will serve as a place of interest for tourists and a living snapshot of history. The work is almost complete with a restored gas pump and oil tank outside and other authentic items inside the building. This building now is a reminder of times gone by.

You can park near the cache location which is very accessible but the area is not paved.
