This microcache is placed near the first of a series of green ribbons that mark the most direct approach from the base to the summit of Bell Bluff. It was placed after my descent following the hide of a cache at the top. On the way down, I discovered the green ribbons and this much easier route than the one I bushwhacked up on the north slope.
Follow the ambitiously named but unlabeled Spanish Bit Drive starting from an obscure trailhead a section of the California Riding & Hiking Trail (CR&HT). Parking is available at the intersection of Via Dieguenos and Calle Colina Roca. The trail starts at N 32 48.809 W 116 44.169. Take the left fork at the 1.2 mile point where the CR&HT splits off to the right.
One-way hiking distance to the cache is about 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1050 feet.
The cache is a log-only camouflaged waterproof match container. To reach the top of Bell Bluff summit, observe the nearby green ribbon, then proceed generally southeast along the western base of the mountain following the occasional ribbon until they start leading upward. In case you get off track, a “crux” waypoint is provided to guide you through one of the trickier spots about half way up. Total distance to the summit is a little over 4 miles from the trailhead with an elevation gain of 1700 feet.
Please be prepared with plenty of water and sunscreen and be watchful of snakes. Don’t forget to sign the summit register, too.
