Geocache Description:

A small cliplock box with room for a TB and small swaps.

Mega Scotland 2014

This standing stone is possibly the last remaining stone of a group of 5 in Craigielea Woods. Another stone standing nearby (with holes in it) is actually an old gate post erected as a joke by a local! Most of the other genuine stones are now dotted around the island built into farmhouse walls. It sits in a small clearing in the woods which could be quite a romantic spot for trysting lovers on a summer afternoon (or perhaps hellishly terrifying on a late-October evening!).

The stone is inscribed with a number of initials – these are said to belong to a group of regular Glasgow holidaymakers from the past known as the ‘Millport Rats’. In more recent times another group of high-spirited youthful holidaymakers managed to manoeuvre a vehicle into the wood and topple the stone. These days it is once again quietly standing as it should be, minding its own business and surveying the passing ages. Please leave it as you find it!

To reach the stone start at N55 46.088 W004 54.630 (you can leave a car here without any problem) and follow the path for a few minutes through the woods - it’s not far. After rainy weather the path can get a bit muddy so wear mud-proof footwear. This route avoids having to climb any gates or fences.

The geocache is at the edge of the wood.
