Geocache Description:

This cache can be seen while driving past it, but do pull over and park. Visit the local merchants. Survey the old trolley barn. Beware of muggles. I gave it a 2 for difficulty just for the stealth you'll need. Enjoy!

This tall stone front building with the large arched former doorway served as the trolley car barn and power house for the 10 trolley cars chartered by the Quakertown Traction Company in 1896. The trolley cars operated from this building until 1929. The “Tripper” trolley ran to Richlandtown and crossed the nearby railroad tracks over a steep iron trolley bridge. The Tripper retired in June 1929, and the iron trolley bridge was removed in 1935. The era of electric trolleys ended and gave way to gasoline buses.

The traction company name is still emblazoned on the embedded concrete plaque over the tall arched doorway. Notice also the tower and the parapet walls that give the building an even larger appearance.

After the trolleys were retired, the building was converted to a theater named “The Broad” which showed silent films accompanied by a live piano. Back then, the local high school had no auditorium, so the building was also used for high school graduations. The building later became a bowling alley, and today houses an antique store.
