The Bridle Path Trail up West Rattlesnake "is an easy walk over rocks and gnarled roots and affords moderate exercise"(Hiking New Hampshire). The view from the top has stunning panoramas of Squam Lake (shown in the movie, On Golden Pond) and the many small peaks of the Lakes Region. The hike is 1.8 miles round trip and should take from 30 to 45 minutes to ascend. Bring a picnic to eat on the ledges at the summit while you take in the magnificent view. The climb is appropriate for small children but they will need close supervision on the ledges at the peak.
If you are able to get to the top of the mountain in the snow, you can locate the cache.
Take exit 24 off I 93 and follow Rt. 3 to Ashland (for a treat, stop at the Common Man Restaurant for lunch or dinner) and into Holderness. Turn left on Rt. 113 in Holderness. The trailhead is 5.5 miles up on the right. There is a parking lot on the left about 70 feet beyond the trail. Parking along the road is also permitted. [If you need to purchase a sandwich, broasted chicken, drinks, etc., go past where you should turn left onto Rt. 113 and look for a gas station and a store about a 1/2 mile up the road.]
