Geocache Description:

Tottenhoe Knolls & Quarry on the outskirts of Dunstable & Luton, are your destination for this journey. Visitors to this location should come equipped with good footware and a pair of gloves. Stunning Views & Local history are your prize for visiting.

Parking can be located at the Totternhoe Knolls Nature reserve & Picnic area which can be found roughly at N51 53.130, W000 34.200 although these coordinates were taken from Multi Map & will place you in a general vacinity. Follow the brown signs as these will lead you to the right spot. Once parked and ready follow the clearly marked footpaths/bridleways, to the following coordinates: N51 53.412 W000 33.610, where you will find an extra clue and a fantastic photo opportunity. We are sure this will put a smile on your faces like it did ours ;) The word 'WHY!' comes to mind! From here the GPS will lead you to your goal. Take in the picturesque views along the way.

Totternhoe Knolls & Quarry both date back to before the 12th Century. The Knolls, once a Motte & Bailey & The Quarry remains of Stone Mines & Spoil heaps of Ancient workings. It is said that some of the stone work of Westminster Abbey is made from Totternhoe Stone. Home to rare orchids and butterflies, the area is currently the centre point of a local restoration campaign, to save it from neglect. More can be found on the subject here. Other local places of Interest include Dunstable Downs, which are home to Bedfordshires highest point & a visitor centre. Enjoy your visit and Please take care at the cache site. Dan & Pid.

Time for a small update (19/11/03):- It became obvious after 'Simply Paul' visited the area, and logged a conclusive no-find, that the local cleanup or the quarry and nature reserve was/is well underway, and that the the wrecked car which the cache had been hidden in had been removed. Many signs can now be seen warning off motorists and the area is looking a lot more tranquille! The picture on the left was taken during my latest visit and can be enlarged by clicking on it. Obviously I have placed a new cache close by the origonal site and added some new coords and a new clue. Things are a little more difficult now ;) bring some shoes with good gripping soles! So once again there is a cache for you to find here, don't miss out, go get it! and whilst your at it why not combine your trip with a visit to Pharisee's latest hide, which is just a mile or so away (click nearest caches for more details!).
