Infamous Travel Bug Prison Oklahoma Branch Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bilgeratt: I hate this... It's killing me. I LOVED this cache...

But it's gone.

Last fall there were 9 trees on the island, which was down 2 from the first time I ever saw it. However, I knew the days were numbered, and why. Believe it or not, it wasn't the FLOODS that did it in.

If you want the long story keep reading.

It was the SLIGHTLY elevated water level in the winter.

The last 5 years the corps has taken to pulling the lake down 2 feet in the late summer to seed millet in the shallow flats at the upper end of the lake. Once the millet heads out in late October, they raise the lake level to about 2 feet ABOVE normal and hold it there for about 3-4 months so the ducks can have easy access to the millet, thereby ensuring hunters easy access to ducks.

Most years they get a fall flood that washes the millet away before it can germinate and take hold. This makes the holding of the lake ABOVE normal completely unnecessary. The last two years that hasn't happened.

Unfortunately, those of you who have been to this cache when the water was normal know exactly where that put the level. Right at the root base of the tree.

Since the entire island was only about 1-2 feet above water, the waves stirred up by the wind attacked the roots of these these trees all winter long no matter WHAT direction the wind was out of. I was on the Twister Bridge in late January with binoculars and could see a couple of trees had succumed, but I believe ours was still standing at that time. When I put the boat on in March to go see, we were down to 3 remaining trees. Two trees were laying down and submerged but still on the island, and I found two trees on the causeway of the bridge while I was crappie fishing. The box was in none of them. It must be in one of the 2 trees that floated away.

The three remaining trees have almost nothing left of their root systems. If they don't fall this summer, one more winter of millet planting will for sure scour this island clean.

A new prison is NOT out of the question, but not for awhile. I've been assesing several places on the lake, and I'm only hopeful of one. It actually would be accessible by hike, but it would be a VERY long hike.... lol. The problem is, I'm in need of a shallower draft boat to reach it. My two I/O boats just can't get to it.

Farewell Prison.... You will be missed.

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Sometimes Travel Bugs break the law. When they do, they are sent here. Located on beautiful beachfront property, we garuntee your bugs will not get to see it as they will be too busy being beaten, tortured and starved into submission. The bugs will then be returned to a useful life in civilization.

Special Equipment and Gear

This cache requires a boat/canoe to reach. Also may need some climbing gear if the water level is low.

I.T.B.P. Oklahoma branch

This is a branch of the original Infamous Travel Bug Prison located in Arkansas. This cache will require a motor boat/canoe to reach due to the location being on an very tiny island. You could compare this prison to Alcatraz. The island does flood at times but you can still reach the cache container even if the island is totally under water. However, the elevation of the cache is 1026 ft. If the elevation of the lake is above 1026 ft then this cache will be underwater and inacessable. You may check the elevation of the lake on This Page

Please if you take a bug, leave a bug or only take a limit of 2 bugs each visit. I placed the restriction due to a couple of suggestions from cachers. It will only make it more fun for all.

The container is now a highly modified ammo box with a LOCK. I had to modify the prison due to the first one dissapearing. To unlock this lock you will need to use the combination of 3696. Look at the first numbers of the lat and long of this cache. That is where the combination comes from in case you forget. I locked this cache so I could rule out any non geocacher taking it in the future. PLEASE BE SURE TO LOCK THE CONTAINER WHEN YOU LEAVE! This will make sure the remaining bugs stay safe and that no one pilages this container.

The location of this cache is located on what is now an island in the lake. It once was an old homestead that was leveled and flooded when the lake was created in the early 70's. If the water level is down you can see numerouse pieces of pottery and glass strewn across the island. You can also see part of an old grain silo on the north west edge of the island. Watch out for flying cows. Yes Flying cows. The bridge that goes over the lake 3/4 of a mile south of the cache site is the same bridge that the movie TWISTER was filmed on that had flying cows going over it.
