Geocache Description:

In the late 1800’s the Seattle & Walla Walla Railroad built the May Creek Trestle in what is now the City of Newcastle WA.

In the late 1800’s the Seattle & Walla Walla Railroad began at Steele's Landing on the Duwamish River, and eventually extended for 21 miles to the coalmines of Newcastle, in South King County, Washington. The old Railroad bed can still be seen and hiked in the City of Newcastle. The railroad crossed the May Creek Valley from Kennydale hill to the Newcastle area on a timber trestle. The Cache is located in an area where the trestle ended and the footprints of the now gone trestle foundations can still clearly be seen. A great history of the Railroad can be found at the Web Site:

Be sure to visit this Web Site, you will need it to solve the Cache Location)

This easy 3-mile round trip hike along the old Railroad grade begins at the trailhead at WayPoint #1. Along this trail you will clearly be able to see the old Railroad grade and in a short distance at WayPoint #2 you will find a post with the number 1X. This number is the miles along the Railroad from Steele’s Landing on its way to the coalmines in old Newcastle. At WayPoint #3 you will find a Newcastle Trail Post. On the Trail Post is the date the City of Newcastle was originally founded, 18AB. On the Web Site is a picture of the trestle built in 18CD.
