St John the Baptist - Bolas Magna
This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in the lovely surroundings of the Shropshire countryside.
We’d like to thank The Washers for conceiving the idea, initiating the series and inviting other cachers to add to it.
St John the Baptist is set in our local village of Great Bolas, historically known as Bolas Magna. The term 'Bolas' means a site on a flood-plain and indeed, the village of Great Bolas is at the confluence of the rivers Tern and Meese (see our Meesechievous series for a lovely walk round this area).
There used to be a medieval church on the site of the current church but no trace of it remains. The current church consists of a Georgian west tower and nave from 1726 and an earlier chancel which was built in the late 17th century. The builder of the nave and tower was John Willdigg.
The interior of the church is Georgian, with 18th century box pews and pulpit. There is a gallery overlooking the main pews to the west.
