The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular
geocache, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT),
a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and
positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest
region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing
interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the
area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten
participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking
rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail
Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum
of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport
validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at
participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport
with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on
the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at
www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of
participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT
passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at
www.geocaching.com .
The Sustainable Forestry Trail is a
demonstration area and self guided trail that starts at the north
end of a roadside rest on Route 6. The trail begins on the
Susquehannock State Forest and ends on Pennsylvania Lumber Museum
property.
Sixteen stations with signage at each stop cover topics such as
forest health, forest growth, logging history, forest ecology,
forest succession, scientific and non-scientific methods of
harvesting, road construction and maintenance, forest regeneration,
timber values, watersheds, wildlife management, and riparian zones.
Among the many things that you will see are various cutting
methods, woven wire deer exclosure fence, old railroad grades, an
old logging camp location, and an old apple orchard.
This short one mile rail will lead you through the beautiful
Commissioner Run Valley. You will find the cache at the halfway
point of the trail. Tree cover makes satellite reception sketchy,
but you are looking for an ammo can with limited hiding spots! In
addition to seeing the things pointed out on the trail, keep your
eyes open for songbirds and wildflowers.
After the last stop on the trail, please follow the signs and
return by walking the edge of the pond and proceeed down the hill
to an access road for the sawmill. Follow this road to the main
paved access road for the Museum and return to the roadside rest
parking area. To complement your hike on the trail, take a tour of
the PA Lumber Museum for a small fee.
