Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the Blackrock freeride mountain biking trails near Falls City.
** Trails are MOUNTAIN BIKE ONLY (no hiking allowed) -- this cache is marked with Difficulty of 5 because a mountain bike is required gear! **

Cache placed by permission. Blackrock Freeride Association officially adopted this trail system in 2002, and the area is managed by Oregon Department of Forestry.

You'll be seeking an ammo box in an area called "Basic Training". NOTE: These trails are under construction - there's buckets and even an ammo box floating about that contains nails for rungs on ladder rides (but the actual cache is marked clearly and contains a log book and the usual cache items). Do not drive thru gate, even if it's open (you could get locked in).

FIRST FINDERS prize: Local Progression Riders Video DVD (shot on location at Blackrock, Wallace in Salem, and Post Canyon in Hood River) - this is a freeride video I made during the 2004 season.

SECOND FINDER prize: Local Progression Riders Video DVD (if first finders is a group of people - please just take the first video and share it - leave this second for the second group to find, thanks!)

Note: both first/second finder prizes claimed, but I may drop additional DVD's in there from time to time!
DETAILS

The single-track trails are MOUNTAIN BIKE ONLY (no hiking!). Definately do NOT hike-a-bike up the trails (people descend at speeds approaching 30 MPH and aren't expecting people to be walking on the trails).

Parking is available near trailhead. Note: You'll be walking up thru Camp Tapawingo. Stick to the road and obey all "no trespassing" signs. If you see freeriders pushing up the road, you'll know you are in the right place! Again, stick to roads when going up, and then enjoy the single track by riding downhill - do not push or ride your bike up the trails. Expect to encounter man-made obstacles (freeride stunts) but all should have easy bypass if difficult (it's part of the ODF approved trail build specification for these trails).

The Blackrock Freeride Association was formed in 2002, and offically adopted these trails in June 2004 as part of Oregon Department of Forestry adopt-a-trail program. The area cache is located in (Basic Training) was built in 2004 over 8 months and represents over 1,000 man-hours of work by dozens of volunteers. The entire trail system is built and maintained by many local freeriders.

Above is from Basic Training - this is Chris "Montana" doing a 360 from the 4 foot drop... For more freeride video of Blackrock see www.norware.com/biking (I did a whole video for 2004!)

Detailed trail maps are available for $5 (donation to BFA) at the Santiam Bicycle shop in Salem.
A decent sample version of trail map is at http://blackrockfreeride.org - it'd do in a pinche - you can see on that map exactly where Basic Training is located!
